I see myself as an artist but I also see myself as being an artist living in my community and I do spend time whizzing around in my cute white Ford Eco sport searching for references to paint! Many a time I wished I’d remembered my mini iPad to take photos! Recently I completed a painting of a flowering almond tree ladened with white blossoms and I did use a photo on my iPad of a local tree found in someone’s front garden! I remember clambering out onto a busy road to quickly snap the tree!
What I tried to capture was the delicacy and yet abundance of the blossoms!
I love the dark branches swooning into the blue sky clutching the soft white petals with their sweet fragrance!
The blossoms bursts open in the cold of the last weeks of Winter signalling the emerging warmer weather of Spring ! They don’t last long as they fall away to new bright green leaves so capturing their elegance and delicacy is about timing!
In keeping with original theme of my heritage, painting blossoms trees reminds me of my Grandparents and in particular their wedding anniversary which was August 4! I would cut almond blossoms and give them to my Grandmother on this day as a child and adolescent!
Memories
Gumtrees
Don’t you just love gum trees? They surround us and their shade is much sort after during our long hot summers! We have a stand of trees behind our house and they stand tall like sentinels bringing bird life into our garden. The sounds of local grass parrots and rosellas piece the morning silence. I have always loved the idea of being an artist able to paint these beautiful trees and doing justice to their majestic colours and form.
The art work of South Australian landscape artist Hans Heyson is breathless and an inspiration to me. In painting this recent painting of a stand of gum trees at the Marion hotel carpark is special to me. They did live in my local area for generations and worthy to be painted. Fortunately I was able to photograph them before most were removed for hotel extensions! I loved experimenting with the colours and I hope you can enjoy their wonder.

Welcome to my first ever Blog! I am very excited about having my own Blog and I hope you enjoy reading about my journey as an artist in Adelaide! This image I painted in Kapunda South Australia as part of my residency as a student and this is my own composition using vintage crockery and food! My theme for my Exhibition, le Journey, is about sharing delightful every day artifacts and daily life experiences.. My work is about celebrating the ordinary and the beautiful in our domestic lives and sensing the goodness and abundance which sustains us all. I like to use vintage and heritage china, furniture, glassware, fabrics, fruit and blooms in my compositions and I hope my work is able to portray the beauty of living in an environment of family, heritage and memories based on my life in Adelaide adjacent to the beaches and stunning countryside, near to the Adelaide foothills and minutes away from the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Bon Appetite!
